As a small business (Kleinunternehmer) you issue invoices without VAT. Chingvoice handles this automatically once the scheme is activated.
Activate the scheme
- Open Settings → Companies and select your company.
- Under Tax & register, switch on Small business under § 19 UStG (no VAT). (Onboarding asks about this directly.)
- Click Save.
From now on, new invoices and quotes are created without VAT. Finalised invoices remain unchanged.
What appears on the invoice
Every invoice includes a note on the VAT exemption, for example:
Steuerbefreit nach § 19 Abs. 1 UStG (Kleinunternehmerregelung). Daher wird keine Umsatzsteuer berechnet oder ausgewiesen.
The law does not prescribe exact wording. Chingvoice adds the note automatically – in English on English invoices. Add your own extra notes under Settings → Texts & emails.
The thresholds
Since 1 January 2025 the scheme applies if
- total turnover in the previous year did not exceed €25,000 and
- total turnover in the current year does not exceed €100,000.
If you exceed €100,000 during the year, the scheme ends immediately – the very transaction that crosses the threshold is already subject to standard VAT. Read more in our guide to the small business scheme 2025.
Switching to standard VAT
If you exceed the threshold or opt out voluntarily, switch off Small business under § 19 UStG in your company settings. New invoices will include VAT again.
